TIPS FOR YOUR SESSION
Location location!
The first thing to decide is where you would like to have your session. We can go to any outdoor location within Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. The options are endless! Whether you are looking for beach, country, forests or gardens, we are blessed with a bit of everything here! I have a handful of locations that I love, but hit me up with all of your ideas! Have a browse through our blog for some ideas and let me know what sort of style sticks out to you.
Time
always hold sessions in the late afternoon, within an hour or two of sunset. This is my favourite time time of day to shoot - the sun is low in the sky, creating soft images with lovely tones and atmosphere.
Hair and Makeup
Having your hair and makeup professionally done can make a huge difference to your photos. You'll feel fabulous and confident! Ladies, bring some gloss and powder to your session to avoid shiny skin, and keep your lips looking lovely!
What to bring
Feel free to bring snacks and drinks for your small children, and any favourite toys that are guaranteed to get a smile!
Bringing along nan, pop, aunty or uncle can be a great idea with really small children. Babies and small children will more often than not have no idea that their parents really want a family photo of them looking at the camera. This is where nan can sing and dance behind the camera so we can capture all the giggles!
WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR?
What you wear for your session can make or break your family photos. What looks good in person may not photograph best or suit the background we are in. Here are a handful of tips and inspirations for you!
DO wear light colours. My style of photography definitely works best with colours like pastels, beige, white, light blue, navy, soft pinks, dusty pink, lilac, mint green, mustard, greys, browns, tan and jeans are all great options! Soft, muted tones looks fantastic in any location.
DO all dress for the same season and same style/theme.
DO wear something that suits your surroundings and think about the look you are going for - if we are off to the beach for your session, think casual, light coloured clothing. If we are off to a leafy setting, avoid greens and reds.
DO wear practical shoes.
DO think about contrast. Match a printed shirt with a solid coloured dress, or a printed dress with a solid shirt. Avoid both patterned or both solid.
DO coordinate, but don't match. Stay within a similar colour family eg. - a light blue dress and a navy dress shirt.
DO think LAYERS and accessories! Necklaces, belts, modern hats, jackets, and scarfs in winter are all great.
DO wear something that makes you feel amazing and comfortable!
DON'T As a general rule I do suggest to avoid any logos or words (surf and skate brands etc) as they can date and cheapen the photos and be distracting to the eye.
DON'T wear too much black if possible, and really bright, bold, acidic colours like bright greens and oranges.
DON'T go too matchy matchy. Try not to wear the same colour shirt or top as your partner. If you partner is wearing a plain white shirt, try and go for a coloured top with a small pattern to compliment. Two shirts of the same colour but a different depth or shade can work!
